Leland Stanford Junior University, Stanford University for short, is situated near the city of Palo Alto on the San Francisco Peninsula. It was founded by the prominent California governor Leland Stanford and his wife – Jane Stanford. It is named after their son, who died in the age of teenager because of the typhoid.
The family received a grant to the university building in 1885, but factually, the building began only in 1887. The university was ready to meet the first students in the October of 1891. The education there was free of charge, and it was so until the 1930. Herbert Hoover, a future president, was the first one to study there among the list of celebrities who received education in Leland Stanford Junior University.
In 1906, the earthquake destroyed some parts and buildings of the Stanford University, and since that time, the following phrase has become a motto of the university: “Die Luft der Freiheit weht” which means in translation “The wind of freedom blows”.
Nowadays, the territory of the University of Stanford accounts for 32 square kilometers, and has several campuses for the students. The main one is situated in the northern part of Santa Clara Valley. All the campuses are very convenient and designed in a way in order to create the best conditions for the students in order to receive the proper education.
