Some Facts about the Leland Stanford Junior University

Stanford University nowadays is under the government of some trustees in a coalition with the president of university, provost, members of the faculty senate, and all the deans. It is such a strong coalition, is not it?

There are several Stanford affiliated institutions such as Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), Stanford Research Institute, Stanford Humanities Center. The libraries of the Leland Stanford Junior University are very large, they account for eight million of various volumes. Green Library is considered to be the main one among the corporation of the libraries of the Stanford University.  The whole corporation includes 19 libraries.

Stanford university is the member of CENIC which stands for  the Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California.

History of Leland Stanford Junior University

Leland Stanford Junior University, Stanford University for short, is situated near the city of Palo Alto on the San Francisco Peninsula. It was founded by the prominent California governor Leland Stanford and his wife – Jane Stanford. It is named after their son, who died in the age of teenager because of the typhoid.

The family received a grant to the university building in 1885, but factually, the building began only in 1887. The university was ready to meet the first students in the October of 1891. The education there was free of charge, and it was so until the 1930. Herbert Hoover, a future president, was the first one to study there among the list of celebrities who received education in  Leland Stanford Junior University.

In 1906, the earthquake destroyed some parts and buildings of the Stanford University, and since that time, the following phrase has become a motto of the university: “Die Luft der Freiheit weht” which means in translation “The wind of freedom blows”.

Nowadays, the territory of the University of Stanford accounts for 32 square kilometers, and has several campuses for the students. The main one is situated   in the northern part of Santa Clara Valley. All the campuses are very convenient and designed in a way in order to create the best conditions for the students in order to receive the proper education.
