They also perform various translational and biomedical research which is a result of adoption of new methods, discoveries and interventions by the curriculum. The main target of the new curriculum in 2003 is to emphasize on research, investigation, and self-direction.

The mission of Stanford Medical school is to become a leading research-intensive center that improves health due to leadership and joint discoveries and providing new technologies into medical care, education and research. The school received two Nobel prizes only in the past year, which proves the high level of intellectual exploration at the school.

When it comes to ranking, the school is always among the leading ones. Due to given opportunities for student investigations students apply for a number of grants and scholarships in the sphere of research. On the basis of medical school survey, in 2007 Stanford got the 7th position for research

Dwelling on the history of the School, it is worth mentioning that in 1908, the Cooper Medical College in San Francisco, CA became an official institution of Stanford University. Stanford University

Stanford University was started In 1885. The donation of $5 million comprised also 8,180 acres of Palo Alto farmland owned by Leland Stanford. The campus of the university was constructed within the period of six years and was located near the Inner Quadrangle and Memorial Church. The red tiled roofs and open arches make Stanford part of the Western landscape.

When Stanford University was found, there were great changes in American higher education: many well-known colleges became universities, and some new schools appeared. These new institutions had a more democratic ways of schooling (e.g. emphasizing research more than before) Stanford couldn’t help reflecting these new views in higher education of the US.

The new-found university tended to balance technical education and the cultivation of young imaginations, to find individual approach for every student and help him integrate in the society. David Starr Jordan, a leading scientific scholar became the first president of the university.

As soon as University was opened (in 1891), it became a competitor of the University of California, Berkeley. Though the new university gained its population among the students very fast not only because of the academic subjects provided, but also because it supported active student life and sports. Though in 1893 the college had to face serious problems – its president Leland Stanford died and the university faced financial crisis, which destroyed a lot of buildings on campus.

In the 1910s Stanford University breathed in new life. With Ray Lyman Wilbur at the head, Stanford began to function as a research institution. President Wilbur reorganized Stanford’s faculties into schools, Wilbur also suggested that Stanford would demand fees.

After World War II another stage of Stanford’s development began, as the U.S. government’s donated money for technological and military research. Stanford University became one, which received most donations. A lot of research was financed by the government. For example, in 1961 the Atomic Energy Commission gave $100 mln dollars for the aim of construction of the path-breaking Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). Such investments helped Stanford promote development plans.

In 2002 Stanford University was no doubt of the best higher educational institutions in the USA. The university enrolls over 14,000 students a year, attracts proficient scholars and provides an alumni accepted in all the parts of the world.

VW Donates $5.75 million To Stanford University

Volkswagen of America has contributed $5.75 to Stanford University with the aim of starting Volkswagen Automotive Innovation Laboratory (VAIL) on the territory of the school. The money will help the university’s new program, which target is to promote auto teaching and investigation. The laboratory is going t work on the developing new transportation solutions.

The executive director of Electronics Research Laboratory Burkhard Huhnke explains that the VAIL is supposed to find new ways of investigating auto technology and claims that the VAIL research will bring autonomous driving that they started with their partnership on the DARPA Grand Challenge vehicles, to the next level.

Soon a huge community of academic and industrial partners (VW and Stanford) will be built. Their cooperation is going t continue in the future. Jim Plummer, the dean of Stanford Engineering, noticed that their experience proves the effectiveness of Standford’s partnership with big industrial companies.

The VW hubcap maker will invest $2 million to Stanford to build the VAIL and will guarantee $750,000 a year during the period of five years to cover the research and training in Stanford’s VAIL-based CarLab.

Vehicle security, mobility and environmental safety will be in the first place for VAIL, ” added Plummer. ” Professor Sebastian Thrun, Associate Professor Chris Gerdes, Professor Clifford Nass have already joined our team, that will make car-building industry safer and more enjoyable”

The VAIL working area will be in a new 8,000 square-foot plot next to the corner of Stock Farm Rd and Campus Drive West. The facility will be equipped with lifts and machines. There will also be composite shops, meeting rooms and some outdoor test-driving space.

Vehicle research has the VAIL as the physical home and CarLab as the intellectual community it houses. Joint work done at VAIL and in the CarLab will create new opportunities for machine-building industry and will provide the community with new technologies based on their research. Plummer also hopes, that very soon students will make their contribution in the development of automobile industry.

Stanford’s law program

A program in legal studies was developed in 1893, when the university’s first two law professors were engaged. They were Benjamin Harrison, whose responsibility was to deliver lectures on the Constitution, and Nathan Abbott, who was a chairperson of the future law program. Abbott created a small faculty the characteristic of which was rigor and excellence that are necessary nowadays. In his honor, the student, who has best academic results, is nominated to Nathan Abbott Scholar.

Stanford’s law program became an independent professional school in the year 1916. When the department provided a professional law course, it moved from Encina Hall, which was men’s dormitory accommodation, to the Inner Quad. The teaching programs and the library funds were rapidly growing, and the law school started to give lectures on medical law as it was requested by the medical faculty.

The World War I, the Great Depression and World War II afterwards did harm to the law school. At the end of 1943, only 30 students studied there. Though notwithinstanding anything the law school showed high academic standards, realizing that in early 1940 the country will need high quality of education. It was understood that government would be in charge of regulation of private affairs, administrative law, taxation, trade regulation, labor law, and the university made related subjects part of the curriculum.

In the late 1940s and 1950s a lot of changes were brought to the law school. They moved to the Quad, the Stanford Law Review was started, Crothers Hall , a new dormitory was built. At that period two future justices of the Supreme Court of the US graduated. Plus that year about 350 students were enrolled.

In 1960s and 1970s the law school began to enroll students of different nationalities, including the first black student in 1965 and the first black professor.
A lot of things were altered at the University since 1893. Firstly, only Californian students were enrolled. Nowadays they come from all the states of the US and some other countries. In 1893 everyone could enter the school, and already in 2005 there were more than 4500 volunteers applied for 170 places. In 1893, there were not many courses offered; nowadays, students have a choice of 175 courses only in the law school, and many others in other parts of the university. Despite these changes, Stanford Law School’s basic target stayed the same. They are still dedicated to the highest standards of learning and to the training of students so that they could serve their clients and the community.

The Center for Teaching and Learning CTL: Brief History

CTL was started at Stanford in 1975 due to a scholarship from the Danforth Foundation. In the San Francisco Bay Area it was necessary to improve university teaching. That is why several centers were founded, funded by the recourses from Stanford. Secondly, CTL’s purpose was expanding the help given to Stanford’s own faculty members, its teaching facilities. At that early period, David Halliburton, a professor of English and Modern Thought and Literature, was at the head of CTL’s.

Though in 1978, the Danforth Foundation left Stanford and the other four centers without its financial support, two of them believed they could go on with internal funding. Those wee Harvard and Stanford, though their purposes were exclusively on-campus. At Stanford, CTL’s target was to improve voluntary training. After a year , when they were able to serve several hundred each year, the Faculty Senate proclaimed, that CTL would be opened to faculty as well. Ever since, about 750 faculty members have used some of our services.

Another important service for students was started in 1996, CTL developed the Program in Oral Communication. The perspective of the undertaking was to develop the public speaking skills and confidence of our students while performing public speeches. The members of staff were: two lecturers and the corps of oral communication consultants. Moreover it was supported by the Program sponsors courses, workshops, a Speaking Center. Due to the Program one can also receive consultation and support, if they want to start teaching oral communication in their classes.

No doubt, recently, CTL has helped the faculty to receive enough information concerning the use of technology necessary for their teaching.
